this past weekend saw my town celebrate its 150th anniversary with a re-enactment of the landing of the first immigrant ship to sail here directly. the ship was called the Strathallan, and descendants of those first early settlers (and various other townsfolk & officials) dressed in period costume and recreated that beach arrival, as well as participating in various other celebrations of the historic event, such as a performance by the Te Aitarakihi Maori Cultural Group, a formal dinner on board the Navy ship HMNZS Canterbury, and a fireworks display at the beach.
